Urethral Hypoplasia

What is Urethral Hypoplasia?

A diagnosis of Urethral Hypoplasia indicates that the urethra is abnormally close to the ventral surface of the penis at some point along its length. The condition can be thought of as a very-near-miss with hypospadias.

Treatment

Treatment is broadly similar to that given for cases of hypospadias. The same skills and resources are required and the optimum age for intervention is the same.

Implications regarding circumcision

The corrective surgery will require donor tissue. Therefore it is vital that the child is not circumcised neonatally. Surgery to correct the abnormality almost certainly will (and always can) include circumcision. There may, however, be some constraints on the resulting style of circumcision that can be achieved.
