Policy Regarding Discussion of Infant Circumcision

CIRCLIST
does not prohibit all mention of the circumcision of infants (Routine Infant Circumcision or RIC) and children, however the Moderators are very aware of the highly divisive nature of the advocacy of infant circumcision, particularly when performed routinely without great thought on the part of either parents or the medical practitioners involved.  For this reason discussion of RIC is strongly discouraged on the List.

Members should take care that any mention of infant circumcision is done in such a way as not to stir up strong feelings from those who consider it better (in the absence of medical need) for a boy to be able to contribute to the circumcision decision.

Similarly, members should respect the views of others regarding the possible medical benefits of early circumcision and refrain from attacks on both infant circumcision and those who choose it.

Everyone should remember that, like the Internet as a whole, CIRCLIST  has a world-wide membership (the days of the Internet being exclusively American are long gone).  As such there is a diversity of religious and cultural backgrounds which color members' views and practices in many things including the decision to circumcise or not.  Sincerely held cultural and religious beliefs are to be respected and it is the policy of CIRCLIST to respect these beliefs.

Clearly the debate about whether an infant should be circumcised or not is OUT as far as CIRCLIST is concerned.  So what might be acceptable in respect of discussing infant circumcision?  Matters such as new techniques and devices; new, safer anesthetic agents; and the type of final result in the adult from differing techniques, including those used exclusively on children, are all legitimate - but MUST be handled with care.

Descriptions of illegal acts, whether with minors or not, are not welcome.  Pictures of minors which are not directly related to circumcision are also unwelcome.

If you have material (stories or pictures) which you believe to be relevant but which might offend DO NOT POST THEM DIRECTLY but send them to the Moderators for an opinion. (Send to CIRCLIST@comcast.net)  We will not censor material unnecessarily or on personal whim but wish only for the ongoing success of CIRCLIST which will not occur if it is perceived to condone illegality.
